Concepcion out to foil Donaire’s debut at superflyweight

It would be no easy outing for Nonito Donaire, Jr. as his rival Rafael Concepcion of Panama vowed to frustrate “The Filipino Flash" in his bid to win the WBA interim superflyweight title this weekend.

“That night, he’s going to go up against a boxer who’s hungry for victory, a boxer who’s coming to take the crown away from him," Concepcion said in a video posted on Donaire's official website.

The 27-year-old Concepcion and the Bohol-born Donaire would battle it out in the “Pinoy Power 2" card on Saturday at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas (Sunday morning in Manila).

Concepcion expressed belief he has the tools to foil Donaire’s first foray at superflyweight after a dominating stint at the flyweight class.

“I have a strong punch, I know how to move around the ring and I know how to wear down my opponent throughout the fight," the Panamanian said, citing his punch, style and endurance would make the difference on fight night.

“I’ll look for the victory from the first bell to the last round (and) the very first moment that I feel I hurt him, I’ll pressure and pressure him until he himself calls it quit," he added.

Donaire, though, is undaunted, confident his characteristic speed and power would serve him well against Concepcion.

“I’ve never fought anyone in my life who were faster than me. So speed alone is one of the things I have an advantage in. (And) like you’ve seen in my previous fights, I have lots of power as well," said the 26-year-old Filipino who had stopped his last five foes at flyweight, including Vic Darchinyan in his breakthrough win.

Donaire, who would wear yellow trunks in memory of the late President Corazon Aquino and customized Philippine-themed boots on fight night, is determined to knock Concepcion out, too.

“I wanna be able to take him out and say that I still have my power in this division," he said.

Donaire is not the only Filipino gunning for a world title in the “Pinoy Power 2" card as young prospect Bernabe Concepcion is set to challenge WBO featherweight king Steven Luevano in the co-main event.
