Donaire foe fails to make weight

MANILA -- Panama’s Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion has failed to make the 115-pound limit for his WBA junior bantamweight interim title tiff with Filipino contender Nonito Donaire, Jr. at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
According to InsideSports.ph, Concepcion was overweight by four-and-a-half pounds, coming in at 119 1/2 pounds and therefore can’t win the title even if he beats “The Filipino Flash” on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Concepcion was fined 20 percent of his purse amounting to $13,000 with $6,500 going to Donaire and the other $6,500 going to the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Donaire, who tipped the scales at exactly 115, will be declared champion should he beat the Panamanian.
The Filipino boxer has decided to push through with the fight despite his opponent's advantage in weight, saying he will do everything tpo win against Concepcion.
“I'm giving honor to the whole Filipino na kahit malaki 'to, kahit ano pang problemang sabi nila, kakayanin ko at gagawin ko ang lahat pa ra manalo tayo," he said.
The two other Filipino boxers on the Top Rank card dubbed as “Pinoy Power 2” both made the weight.
Heavy handed Bernabe “Kamaong Llave” Concepcion who battles Steven Luevano for his WBO featherweight title came in at 125 ½ along with the champion who also tipped the scales at 125 ½.
Bernabe said fight fans will expect a good fight between him and the reigning WBO champ.
“Bibigyan ko po kayo ng isang magandang laban," he said.
Promising light welterweight Mark Jason Melligen weighed in at 145 pounds which was the same weight as his Mexican opponent Ernesto Zepeda.
Melligen said he will be using a hook-straight, left upper combination to beat Zepeda, whose boxing style remains a bit unfamiliar to the Filipino light welter.
“Kasi 'yung kalaban ko pinalitan. 'Di na si rosales, si Zepeda na. Kay Rosales ang pinag-aralan ko," said Melligen.
"Pero okay na 'yun sa akin, kahit sino pa sila, basta handang handa ako sa laban," he added. With a report from Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau
