Pavlik-Wright considered, Guzman-Funeka to Montreal

You can call it matchmaking by the process of elimination.
I’m starting to hear a low volume buzz that HBO is hoping to induce middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik into taking an October bout against Faded Glory Winky Wright.

Golden Boy is whispering that Wright, turning age 38 on Nov. 26, will fight in October.

HBO fight buyers really want to make a dream match between Pavlik and wonder boy Tall Paul Williams but both Al Haymon (Williams) and his sworn enemy Bob Arum (Pavlik) want top dollar.

HBO’s budget is fairly depleted for 2009 so the prime cable network views Williams-Pavlik as a 2010 megabout.
Wright is anxious to fight once more this year even at reduced prices. Does Pavlik, whose last bout was a stoppage of Marco Antonio Rubio in February, feel the same? We shall soon find out.

There may not be much excitement to be derived from Wright against Pavlik if Wright’s desultory performance against Williams is any indication. Williams had his way against his fellow southpaw from first ding to final dong, all 12 rounds were dominated by the younger fighter.

In other Golden tinged news, the IBF lightweight title bout between undefeated Dominican Joan Guzman and South Africa’s Ali “Rush Hour” Funeka may be placed as a supporting bout under a Nov. 28 HBO rematch between IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute and Librado Andrade. The latter is a GBP fighter while Guzman recently inked a long term pact with Oscar de la Hoya's promotional company.
