Donaire fights overweight Panamanian

NONITO DONAIRE, JR. is not just eyeing a second world crown when he fights Panama’s Rafael Concepcion Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It will also be a homecoming of sorts in the division for Donaire, who became the only one eligible to claim the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight belt after Concepcion failed to make the weight.

Donaire made the limit of 115 pounds while Concepcion startlingly came in at 119½ in Saturday’s official weigh-in for the 12-round battle.

Donaire agreed to go on with the fight although the Panamanian was fined $13,000 which represented 20 percent of his fight purse. The amount was equally divided between the Nevada State Athletic Commission and Donaire.

In the co-feature of the card dubbed “Pinoy Power 2,” World Boxing Organization featherweight champion Steven Luevano will stake his title against Filipino underdog Bernabe Concepcion.

Both fighters registered identical weights of 125½ lb yesterday.

Another Filipino seeing action in the preliminaries is welterweight prospect Mark Jason Melligen (15-1, 11 KOs) who will go up against Mexican Ernesto Zepeda (39-12-4, 34 KOs) in a 10-round bout.

“He’s still definitely a live wire opponent because inside the ring he will be heftier and could be stronger,” said Donaire in an overseas telephone interview with the Inquirer.

Before claiming the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight crown with a sensational one-punch 5th-round TKO win over Vic Darchinyan two years ago, Donaire had fought in the super flwyeight class for almost half of his eight-year career.
