Williams to fight Pavlik for middleweight titles

Boxing promoter Dan Goossen on Tuesday said an accord has been reached for Paul Williams to challenge Kelly Pavlik for his two middleweight world championship belts.
Goossen, who promotes Williams, said the fight will take place Oct. 3 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. It will be televised by HBO.
"Yes, we have come to an agreement," said Goossen, president of Goossen Tutor Promotions in Sherman Oaks. "Contracts are being drawn up and we will get this thing formally announced next week."
Pavlik, of Youngstown, Ohio, is 35-1 with 31 knockouts. He will be attempting to make the third successful defense of the belts he won from Jermain Taylor via seventh-round technical knockout in September 2007.
Williams, of Augusta, Ga., is 37-1 with 27 knockouts. He is a two-time welterweight champion and currently holds an interim junior middleweight belt. The 6-foot-3 southpaw has fought twice at middleweight.
"This is a big fight," Goossen said. "We have been saying it to anyone who would listen that Paul is the best pound-for- pound fighter in the world encompassing weight classes from 147 (welterweight) to 168 (super middleweight). ... So he is going up to middleweight again to prove that he is the best."
