Donaire passes pre-fight checkup, but has asthma

MANILA, Philippines -- IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. has been given a clean bill of health by a doctor, clearing him for his title showdown with Panama’s Rafael Concepcion on Aug. 15 (Aug. 16 in Manila).

However, a secret Donaire has kept for quite a while was discovered during the checkup.

Dr. Robert Boyd, who conducted the mandatory pre-fight physical examination on Donaire, found that the boxer had asthma.

According to a TV report, Donaire has kept the illness a secret since he started boxing in 1994. Nevertheless, he remained upbeat on his fight with Concepcion for the interim WBA super flyweight crown, adding that he is currently in tip-top condition and ready to snatch his second world title.

Donaire headlines Top Rank Inc.’s “Pinoy Power 2” card, which will be staged at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the chief supporting bout, Filipino Bernabe Concepcion takes his first crack at a world title against WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano.

Solar Sports will be airing the card at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
