Donaire pays tribute to Cory, Pinoy heritage in title fight

Nonito “The Filipino Flash" Donaire, Jr. a fighter known for his fashion as much as his boxing prowess, will be entering the ring against Panama’s Rafael Concepcion clad in Philippine-themed fighting attire.

For starters, the Bohol-born Filipino will be wearing yellow trunks in place of his usual blazing red - in memory of the late President Corazon “Cory" Aquino.

“This is the first time that I’ll be fighting in yellow trunks and that was her (Aquino’s) color," Donaire said in a recent conference call as quoted by Saddoboxing.com.

“Of course, there will be a little red because of who I am. It’s just to pay respect (to Cory)," he added.

In addition, the 26-year-old Donaire will also be wearing a pair of nationalistic boxing boots.

Designed by fellow US-based Pinoy, Indianapolis Fight Sports Examiner Dennis Guillermo, the boots carry a triangular Philippine flag and a "lightning" symbolic of his ring monicker.

“It bears the colors of the Philippines and the ‘war’ red our flag embodies which I bring into the ring to defend our country’s honor every time I fight. It is also flashy and stylish like me. The shoes really captured what I’m about," Donaire said in describing the boots.

Former flyweight king Donaire will be making his debut at superflyweight on Saturday at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas (Sunday in Manila), disputing the interim WBA title with Concepcion in the main event of “Pinoy Power 2."

The current seventh-ranked fighter in Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound list, Donaire is in the final stages of training in Las Vegas under trainers Jonathan and Dodie Boy Peñalosa and strength trainer Michael Bazzle.

He said the team is preparing him for whatever the tough Concepcion will throw at him.

“I’ve seen a few of Concepcion’s fights on the web. He’s a tough guy with heavy hands. We know that we are prepared for however this fight may go," said Donaire, who’s expected to bank on his speed and power against his rival.

“I’m training the best I can to be ready for whatever he (Concepcion) comes at me," he added.

Donaire will be anchoring the Filipinos’ campaign in “Pinoy Power 2." Also seeing action are youthful prospect Bernabe Concepcion against WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano and Mark Jason Melligen versus Mexico’s Michele Rosales in a 10-round welterweight fight.
