Pavlik's promoter and Top Rank president Todd duBoef and William's promoter, Dan Goossen, had been negotiating the fight for the past few weeks, but the discussion was stalled over how they would split the $3.75 million HBO license fee, as well as the live gate, approximated around $2 million. The deal was finally sealed when HBO gave the two sides a deadline and wouldn't commit to give either fighter a date in the fall to fight another opponent. Ultimately, duBoef and Goossen made a deal with the Williams side receiving just under $2 million, with Pavlik having a rematch clause available should he lose.
